European Parliament’s First-Ever Intergroup on Education and Skills Officially Launched

Yesterday, 11 February 2025, marked a significant milestone in European education policy with the official launch of the European Parliament Intergroup on the Future of Education and Skills for a Competitive Europe. This initiative brings together Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from across committees to address the evolving educational and skills landscape required for Europe’s transition to green and digital societies.

UNICA welcomes and supports this new Intergroup, recognizing its vital role in shaping education policies that will equip citizens with future-ready competences. The establishment of this Intergroup highlights the European Parliament’s commitment to improving the quality, equity, and inclusiveness of education and training systems across Europe.

This initiative arrives at a critical moment as Europe strives to meet its 2030 social targets while addressing pressing challenges such as skills shortages, the need for upskilling and reskilling, and the growing scarcity of education professionals. By fostering a collaborative and cross-sectoral approach, the Intergroup aims to create policies that support lifelong learning and ensure that European citizens are prepared for the demands of a rapidly changing global landscape. Close to 100 MEPs have declared their support for the creation of this Intergroup. In addition, the Intergroup has received significant support from education and training stakeholders, alongside organisations committed to advancing lifelong learning in key areas vital to the EU’s priorities.

As a network dedicated to fostering academic collaboration and policy engagement, UNICA looks forward to engaging with the Intergroup to contribute the perspective of higher education institutions in European capitals. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive, resilient, and innovative Europe, where education remains a cornerstone of social and economic progress.
