University of Belgrade and University of Iceland join the UNICA Network!

new members logos.pngThe UNICA General Assembly 2013 in Rome voted unanimously in favour of the University of Belgrade and the University of Iceland joining the UNICA Network. We are pleased to welcome both Universities among our members!

 

University of Belgrade

Founded in 1808 as the Belgrade Higher School, the University of Belrade (http://www.bg.ac.rs/en_index.php) is currently the largest university in Serbia with the over 80,000 students and over 3,000 doctoral candidates, and one of the leading higher education institution in the Western Balkan region and has 31 faculties, 11 Institutes and 9 Centres. 


The University of Belgrade is quite active in international research and education programmes such as FP7 (COST, Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, etc) and holds a high number of bilateral agreements with European and non-European universities aimed at collaborating in different research fields and exchanging doctoral candidates.


UB is already a member of several international networks including the European University Association (EUA), Balkan Universities Network, the Danube Rectors’ Conference (DRC), the Network of Universities and Research Centres of the Adriatic-Ionian Region (UNIADRION) and the Agency of the Francophonic Universities (AUF).

 

University of Iceland

The University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands www.hi.is) is Iceland's oldest and largest institution of higher education. Founded in 1911, it has grown steadily from a small civil servants' school to a modern comprehensive university, providing instruction for about 14,000 students (1,100 foreign) and 500 PhD candidates in 5 schools and 25 faculties. The main fields of studies are Humanities, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Social Sciences and Education.

The University has a high number of co‐operation agreements not only with Nordic HEIs but also with many other universities in the European Union (570 Erasmus inter‐institutional agreements) and in third countries. Of 340 degree programmes 13 have English as their language of instruction, 4 at undergraduate level and 9 at postgraduate level. In addition, in several programmes individual courses are taught. Most doctoral programmes are conducted in English.

The University of Iceland also holds a leading role in sustainable energy and environmental research. 


The University of Iceland strives to excel when it comes to equality. The University operates an ambitious equality policy and has a strong set-up in terms of implementation. A great deal of important work is also done by students at the University and the grassroot organizations of students.
