COP 27 | Statement from UNICA addressing the Climate and Environmental Emergency

On the occasion of the COP27 (Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Change Conference) in November 2022, UNICA shared a Statement addressing the Climate and Environmental Emergency.

The Statement is the result of collaborative work among academic leaders responsible for sustainability within UNICA member universities and the UNICA Green & SDGs working group, collecting both perspectives from the academic community as well as administrative staff. The initiative was led by the coordinator of the UNICA Green & SDGs working group, Matthew Lawson (Senior SRS Learning, Teaching and Reporting Manager at the University of Edinburgh), who closely collaborated with the UNICA Office to finalise the document.

About the statement

The statement goes through the longstanding commitment of UNICA to sustainable development. A commitment which considers cultural and national peculiarities of member universities as added values to foster collaborations and exchanges among European universities. During this journey, students have been at the core of the UNICA action – in fact, they are the initiators of the UNICA Green & SDGs working group.

Finally, UNICA calls on its network of universities to take significant action to reduce their negative climate and environmental impacts, and harness their academic research and communities to support society and policymakers make the transition to a carbon neutral society and address social inequalities such as energy poverty.

This statement aims to be both a tool that the universities can use to adopt initiatives and engage in actions to reduce their climate and environmental impacts, as well as a reminder for UNICA to continue actively engaging in and promote sustainable collaborations!
